DALSTON PORTRAITS

London, 2008

West African, Romanian, Pakistani, Polish, Caribbean, Afghani, Hasidic Jewish and Turkish to name but a few of the prominent communities living in the East London district of Dalston. They belong to what has been called the a new ‘The Fourth World’. Dalston Portraits captures in black and white the many peoples who live within wealth of the first world and yet remain excluded from it culturally and economically. The artist tries to capture the faces and the expressions of the communities, often showing hopelessness, nostalgia, disappointment, uncertainty and happiness. Santamarina uses a square format in the dimensions of old silent cinema, working in charcoal, water and ink traces with stark pencil movements contrasting, creating an unexpected rhythm. Part of a total series of 110 drawings on paper.
