La Llorona 5/5 VELORIO

Santiago de Chile, March, 2006

Watercolor 5/5 is a representation of death and pain throught the dance of a female character.

An audiovisual document in which the pictorical tradition that derives from the Christian imagery of Our Lady of Pain is reviewed.

The video is an interpretation of a Chilean Dance known as ‘Velorio de Angelito’ or ‘Cueca de Velorio’ represented during one night by the parents and the relatives of dead children, under ten years of age. (‘‘The family believed the spirit of the boy joined the celestial choir and they celebrated it with this dancing meeting”). The parents, dressed in black, put two angel wings on the boy and danced inside a closed room. They stagger along in a shrinking position holding a handkerchief. As a symbol of goodbye to the godson, the last ones to dance were the godparents at dawn. Then the local priest used to sing the verses of the ‘angelito’. Once they finished the song, the funeral procession towards the cemetery took place”.
